Lilla Roger 2013 Global Talent Search Contest!

I'm so excited to be a finalist in the 2013 Lilla Rogers Global Talent Search Contest and I need your vote! There were over 1500 entries from 33 different countries. They added online voting (like the Voice or Idol: ) in addition to the juror voting. This is my entry below for phase 2-the farmer's market tote. They narrow down to 6 people and then the winner! (Phase 1, a Journal cover is at the below, too!) I have wanted to be represented by Lilla Rogers since I met her in 2001 at ICON. I've always dreamed of doing product design work and fabric. She's got great connections and is one of the best reps in the US & Europe. It would bring me a lot of opportunities I've dreamed about. I have a lots of ideas ready to go. Thanks for your support and encouragement! Voting closes EOD Sunday, Sept. 8. You can only vote once per email address and you have to "confirm" each address.

Here’s how to vote in three easy steps:
(1) Go to
the gallery page.

(2) Underneath name of the artist (below their image) you will see the number of votes they have received. Click on ‘votes’ and follow the instructions.

(3) Once you have submitted your vote you will be sent an email to validate your vote. Please note if you do not complete the simple one-click validation process (by clicking on the link in the email you receive) your vote will not be counted. If you cannot find the email in your inbox please check your spam folder.

What an honor to be in UPPERCASE again! This issue is about collage and assemblage. "I assemble found objects, some of which I have collected since childhood. My twist is that I carve and create aspects of them." Like the birds and baby elephant head. This circus parade was an inspiration at a photoshoot. Now, I am eager to create a whole circus or zoo window display soon!

AAC Spring Class, May 2013

I've been taking a great Paper Mache Sculpture class at the Art Academy of Cincinnati this spring. Stephanie Cooper is the instructor-she is a wonderful teacher and a master of this media. We have a great group of people in the class. Here is my first attempt...I will post more soon.

I'm so excited to be included in UPPERCASE! It's a beautifully done and an expertly crafted magazine for creatives. They were looking for work that dealt with the theme of fragility and transparency...faith: not knowing, but believing with all your heart.

“Faith is not something tangible that you can see. Sometimes it is very hard to see and sometimes you can see it everywhere you look- even in the most ordinary place, person or situation.”

WACC New Work-Collages by Janet Zack, Sept. 2011

What a fun show at the Women's Art Club of Cincinnati. Thanks to everyone who came out. It was a great opportunity to show a new body of collage work I've been doing since I took a class with the collage artist Mary McCleary in Santa Fe last year. Everyone had to bring enough items to share with the class. I bought an 8lb. box of odds and end photos from Sandy and Joe from Rhubarb Reign (antique flea market vendors). You never know where inspiration will comes from! Left is "Our Town" (11 x 14) and right is "Lake Near Arles, France 1942" (10 x 8) ©2011 J. Zack.

Julie Arkell Workshop at Les Soeurs Anglaises in South West France, September 2011

I had the opportunity to go to France to Les Soeurs Anglaises to take Julie's workshop with my good friends Paula Joerling and Lori Siebert. It was a magical and soul-affirming experience. Katie and everyone at LSA has created an unbelievably beautiful place and experience. I had the time of my life...I can't wait to go back and see everyone and to do other workshops. I loved making new friends with kindred spirits so far away.

"Julie is one of the UK's best recognized contemporary folk artist working in papier-mache and mixed media. She combines stitch, ephemera, knit, vintage fabric and papier-mache in her own distinctly personal and sophisticated way. Her results are magically appealing and unique!"

God’s Faces: The Art of the Sacred Mask Retreat, Oct. 2010
Bethany Spring, The Merton Institute Retreat Center, New Haven, Kentucky

Artist and brand designer Janet Zack will lead participants in creating a “sacred mask”. On Friday evening each participant will create the base of a mask of their own face. Saturday will be spent in meditation as participants decorate their masks with paint, found objects and collage. Jonathan Montaldo, Director, will offer reflections, of poetry and music by Thomas Merton and other spiritual authors, as participants create their masks. On Sunday Janet and Jonathan will lead a ceremony to memorialize the inner work of the retreat as we created our “sacred masks”.
